Tysabri Infusion #3

So, um... HI! Your friendly (though woefully inadequate) neighborhood non-astrophysicist under-achiever here!

The pity party is over. Obviously.

Now I am home and reveling in the fact that I've made it through my third Tysabri infusion and I'm feeling... tired. Yeah. So no change. But on the upside, I had no rash, no hives, nothing remarkable. Yay! I also got to see a couple of my favorite nurses at the outpatient infusion clinic and the IV insertion was painless and left zero bruise. Would that that were the case every month. As someone who's had her fair share of IVs now, I can say my favorite nurses are the ones that a) can insert an IV and/or draw blood while I feel absolutely nothing, b) said IV does not leave a bruise or mark of any kind after the IV is removed, c) offer me a pillow and nice warm blankets and d) bring me Diet Sierra Mist and a sandwich.

I mean, if you have to be stuck with needles and sit there for two hours and watch some poor old woman get her blood transfusions, the least they can do is offer you a sandwich. Right?

In other (mind-bogglingly exciting) news....

Happy Birthday! to my mom... She turns a year older today. We celebrated her birthday with (a small subset of) our extended family last Friday but I'm going over to her place tomorrow for a smaller celebration. I'm bringing some Rosemary Beef Skewers (and maybe some homemade French fries if I have enough energy) and to top things off I'm planning to make a Rubarb Sponge Pudding cake (thank you Bon Apetit!)

It should be fun and the bonus is, I get to see my sister, who's been in Romania and Hungary for the last two weeks. Looking forward to hearing about her trip!!

On a mostly unrelated note: while I was at New Seasons Market this evening picking up the rhubarb for the above-mentioned sponge cake, I was poking around in the dairy section and noticed they now carry a vegan sour cream made by the folks at "Follow Your Heart." This is the same company that makes Vegenaise (the best non-dairy, no-egg version of mayonaise I've found thus far.) I've tried several of Tofutti's versions of non-dairy sour cream (not 100% sure if it's vegan) and in my experience it was okay, not great. I adore sour cream (especially on burritos!) and ultimately, Tofutti's version just didn't taste good enough for me to use on a regular basis. It's got a sort of weird after-taste, reminiscent of plastic, that I just couldn't get past. So I'm curious whether the Follow Your Heart version is any better than Tofutti's.

Sour cream and cheddar cheese (well, most cheeses, actually) are some of the items I just haven't been able to give up since I've become aware of my egg and dairy sensitivities. The biggest reason for this is lack of suitable substitutes. I use Coffeemate in my coffee rather than half and half, I use Follow Your Heart's Vegenaise when I need mayo on a sandwich or in a recipe, and for the most part I avoid eggs and have a substitute I use for baking when needed. But sour cream and cheese are two items for which I just haven't found anything that comes even close. But if FYH's sour cream follows the standard set by their vegan mayonaise perhaps I'll have finally found a suitable substitute for sour cream and can stop buying the "normal" variety. Has anyone tried it? (Or for that matter, their cream cheese?)

LOL...just catching up on my blog reading here. You know, not only can I NOT spell astro-whatever-isist, I think I HAVE somehow mastered the "ass" part in trophysicist after all these years. Yes, my work here is complete. :-)

I agree. The least they can do is bring you a sandwich. I like how you think so I am adding you to my bloglist.

My Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis

On June 23, 2006, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Among other topics, this blog is devoted to my ongoing experience with the disease.

Pharmaceuticals

Shortly after my MS diagnosis, I began taking Avonex. Although I managed to mitigate the "flu-like" side effects, for the most part, the drug unfortunately seemed to exacerbate my clinical depression.

So, on July 19, 2007 I switched to Copaxone. The Copaxone worked quite well for a couple months - except for some minor issues with injection-site reactions - and I felt much better.

Unfortunately, the Copaxone also exacerbated my depression. So I met with my psychiatrist to find a mix of anti-depressants that would counteract the debilitating depression I experienced. After spending most of December 2007 in a complete funk and - some days - being totally unable to leave the house, I finally stopped taking the Copaxone on my own. I immediately began to feel better and with some help from my primary care doc - who discovered I also had a mild case of hypothyroidism - I started to feel like myself again.

On May 16, 2008, I had my first infusion of Tysabri. With the exception of some anxiety issues, I've had no trouble with it so far. Still, it's early and the jury is still out... stay tuned for ongoing updates!
