Live Blogging Failure: How I tried to tell ya'll about my Tysabri in "real time"

So I went this morning to the infusion center and once I had signed my life away, declaring that YES, I MIGHT DIE because of this drug and they got the IV in my arm, I decided to be clever and do what all the geeky technology bloggers do when they go to a trade show: they power up their laptops, sign on to the wi-fi network and proceed to regurgitate everything the keynote speaker is sharing, posting at various intervals for an audience that is doubtless sititing at home on the edge of their seats waiting to find out about whatever the fabulous keynote speaker is talking about.

Anyway, so knowing that I had Wi-Fi access and that I can access my Movable Type installation through my cell phone, I thought it'd be fun to entertain myself by telling you all about my first Tysabri infusion, while it was happening.

Yes, I am a geek. (What else is new?)

The trouble is, I typed out about four paragraphs, hit "publish" and got an error. The wi-fi connection had apparently died while I was mid-blog and as I had no cell reception in the outpatient infusion center I was stuck: I lost the post. Grr... So I am a live-blogging failure. I suppose, in the grand scheme of things, there are worse fates. And in the end it's fine, because I'm sure the bulk of my readership (all ten of you now? ;-) was not sitting with baited breath waiting for the story of my Tysabri infusion.

And really, that's a good thing. Because other than a bit of fussing to get the IV in, it was pretty uneventful. The infusion took about 55 minutes, I sat there - as required - for an additional 60 minutes and then they let me leave. I now have a bit of a tender spot where the IV was but other than that no problems whatsoever. I did come home and sleep for 3 hours afterwards, but my guess is that had more to do with inadequate volume of sleep last night than it did with the Tysabri.

So. So far so good. Hopefully the 97-degree weather today (and whatever the weather decides to do this weekend) won't trigger a relapse! My next infusion is June 13, assuming all continues to go well. I'm keeping fingers crossed that this drug won't cause me too many troubles on the side-effects front and that I'll be able to stay on it for a while. Because after this, I think I'm out of options unless I want to go back on Copaxone...

Comments

Hey you!
It seems like forever since I left you a comment. I am glad to hear that the Tysabri went well for you (keeping my finger's crossed). The weather here is just as hot and I'm not ready for it (never really am at these temps). Take care and keep us updated.

My Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis

On June 23, 2006, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Among other topics, this blog is devoted to my ongoing experience with the disease.

Pharmaceuticals

Shortly after my MS diagnosis, I began taking Avonex. Although I managed to mitigate the "flu-like" side effects, for the most part, the drug unfortunately seemed to exacerbate my clinical depression.

So, on July 19, 2007 I switched to Copaxone. The Copaxone worked quite well for a couple months - except for some minor issues with injection-site reactions - and I felt much better.

Unfortunately, the Copaxone also exacerbated my depression. So I met with my psychiatrist to find a mix of anti-depressants that would counteract the debilitating depression I experienced. After spending most of December 2007 in a complete funk and - some days - being totally unable to leave the house, I finally stopped taking the Copaxone on my own. I immediately began to feel better and with some help from my primary care doc - who discovered I also had a mild case of hypothyroidism - I started to feel like myself again.

On May 16, 2008, I had my first infusion of Tysabri. With the exception of some anxiety issues, I've had no trouble with it so far. Still, it's early and the jury is still out... stay tuned for ongoing updates!
