Well, I've done it. I've gone and cancelled and then chopped up my trusty American Express card.

Also, I was pleasantly surprised that, when I called them, the American Express people were more than happy to just cancel my account for me. The Customer Service Representative asked why, and then when I told her she just said, "OK, I can take care of that for you." No pushy offers, no histrionics, nothing! She just cancelled it.

So that's done. My day is starting out well, except for the cold I appear to be nursing despite sleeping - literally - all weekend. Ugh.
