Busy, Busy, Busy!

Wow. Well, it's been quite the busy day today! Actually, it's been a pretty busy week, what with volunteering with a group of folks from work at the Oregon Human Society on Thursday and today's activities of helping Fran move, driving around town with dad looking for an area rug and then scrubbing every speck of schmutz from the kitchen!

The humane society project was helping to maintain the dog-walking path they have out there and that involved shoveling loads of mulch (read: manure) into wheelbarrows, which were then taken out to various areas of the walk and spread onto and around the plants. By the end of the 2 hours we were all totally wiped out. However, it was fun, and nice to catch up with friends and meet new co-workers!

After spending more than 2 hours in the hot sun, though, I was feeling quite wilted. Still, I'm shocked by how much better I feel, how much energy I had on Thursday to do this sort of thing and even had enough energy to go to the company's picnic afterwards!

I got up quite early this morning (for a Saturday) and headed out to Fran's house to help pack her up and move her in with her fiancee! I finally got to meet the fiancee's pooches (two little chihuahuas) and they are adorable... And then I headed out to dad's, where we hopped in the car and drove all over kingdom come to check out area rugs.

These suckers range in price from about $99 (at Fred Meyer) to $3500 or more (at NW Rugs). We, of course, found one I liked for the budgeted price (dad was buying the rug for me for my birthday!) at the first place we went and thus ended up going back there two hours later and taking it with us. It's a neutralish color with green accents that match my couch. So it's all good. Rennie likes it because she can now jump off the couch without sliding a foot on the hardwood floors; I like it because it gives the room a cozier feel to it!

After dad left, I did some weeding out in the front yard (the dandelion garden I've been "cultivating" was in desperate need of attention, as the flower stalks were taller than Rennie!) and then cleaned and mopped the kitchen. It was just gross in there and now it is not gross.

After all this hard work, though, I've spent the last couple hours sitting on the couch watching Little House on the Prairie. I brushed Rennie - that's about the extent of my activities for the evening. I'd intended to do some homework but, well, that just didn't happen. Oops!

So, tomorrow! Again, though, I was really active today - more so than I've been in months - and I still feel pretty good! Progress!! I don't know if the Copaxone is doing anything for my MS, but being OFF the Avonex sure is making me feel better! YAHOO! (Never again, people: I will NOT go back to the Avonex. The benefits are just not worth feeling that crappy all the time.)

In other news, I got my test results from my neurologist's office. Guess how much they charged me...

Go on, guess!

TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS.

Yes, you read that right. TWENTY. FIVE.

Wanna know what she did? She copied 10 pieces of paper and then stuck them in an 8.5x11 envelope with TWO stamps on it and mailed it to me. Now, keep in mind that I asked for the test results from my most recent blood work because I wanted to know my Vitamin D levels. The bloodwork results were three pages. The Vitamin D? ONE PAGE. That was all I asked for, and I got 10 pages.

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

At this point, I don't even know what to do. Seriously. I got the envelope in the mail yesterday and I'm still so irritated and agitated about it that I've not come up with a solution to this little conundrum.

My gut response is to call her up and rip her a new one, but I suspect this would not get me what I want, so that's out. (Instead, I'm whining about it to anyone who will listen, including the Innernets! Lucky you! :) I'm hoping that the appropriate approach will become clear to me in the next day or so, and I'll get the "misunderstanding" sorted out with some measure of grace and minimal casualties.

At the moment, though, I'm still so puzzled by what's transpired so far I'm afraid to pick up the phone. It couldn't possibly get worse, could it?

Hi Lindsey, The answer is simple. Call the doctor and tell him what his receptionist did and tell him you are not going to pay $25 for this service. And you would appreciate if his staff treated you with more courtesy in the future. You can bet he doesn't know about it. And if he does and condones that type of treatment I would find a new doctor ASAP. That is simply the most outrageous thing I have heard of. She is in the wrong job. love mom

I am SOOOOOOOOOOO glad you are feeling more alive and energetic!! That is fantabulous news...LOL I know I also stopped the Avonex a couple of years ago for the very same reason...it wasn't worth spending 104 days of my 365 feeling feverish and like hammered crap.

As far as the neuro goes...maybe writing your thoughts down in a letter FIRST is the way to go. I personally am far more eloquent and less emotional in writing. You don't have to send it, but formulating a strategy for yourself might be good...just a thought.

what is it that you want that you won't get from bitching at her?

Thanks again for yer help moving! Home at last!

$25 is so silly. I don't blame you for feeling annoyed. Hope you get a lot out of this FGO (f$*&ing growth opportunity).

dude, i hope you bitch her out and tell your dr. it is the only way. i have been dealing with bitchy nurses all last week from my mom's hospital stay. seriously, stand up to her!

Front desk working in a medical setting is often a thankless job and difficult as hell to fill with competant people. This means that doctors will often respond to bad front desk staff by shoving their fingers in their ears and chanting, "Everythingisfineeverythingisfine".

Or it can mean that the person that is in charge of staffing the front desk doesn't report problems because they don't want to be bothered with trying to replace an idiot with a different flavor of idiot.

None of which means that you should give them a red cent of the $25, because of course you shouldn't. What it does mean is that you should pen a friendly letter to the doctor, stating that you aren't certain if she's aware of an office policy that charges blood money for patient's own records, but that she should be aware of it. That you won't be paying the $25 for what is one piece of useful paper, and that if the fee isn't waived you'll be finding another practice.

Letter number two is where you leave and let her know that you'll be telling everyone about the treatment at her practice.

I'd bet a million to one the doc has no knowledge of an office "policy" to charge $25 for a copy of the patient's files, particularly when the patient wants a copy of a single sheet of paper.

That is beyond stupid.
