It's been... a day.
Yep, it's been a day, all right. One o' them days.
It all started at about 7 a.m. this morning when Rennie woke me up. Because her "breakfast time" is at 8 a.m., she wakes me up sometime between 7 and 8 every morning. And, to be clear, by "wakes me up" I mean "licks my face until I want to throw her cute little body across the room." It is at times like these I am grateful she is a Yorkie with a tiny little tongue and not a Golden or Rottie or some other Large Dog with a slobbery, disgustingly long tongue.
I usually play with her a bit and then roll over and try to go back to sleep until 8 a.m. But I'm always up by 8 and feeding her because if I didn't, I am convinced she'd start gnawing on my nose. So: always up at 8.
This morning was no exception to the 'up at 8' pattern, except that between the hours of 7 a.m. (when she woke me up) and 8 a.m. (when I finally got out of bed to feed her) she barked non-fucking-stop. And I, having stayed up much too late, slept through it. So I'm not entirely sure what transpired between those hours because the only thing I remember is hitting the snooze button on the alarm clock (yes, even with the dog I set the alarm. Don't ask, I don't know why) and then stumbling into the kitchen at about 8 to give her the darned food already!
And then I did what I always do: I went back to bed. And usually, I'm up by 9 to get started working. But not so this morning. Bad Day, Part the First.
This morning, I fell back to sleep and didn't wake up until almost 10. Uhhh, whoops. So yeah, overslept and ended up scurrying about trying to get a few last-minute things done before I had to head downtown.
So I did those things, headed downtown, succesfully navigated my way to Kinko's to make copies and blah blah blah. The stuff and nonsense of everyday life. While I was at Kinko's, the cell phone rings and it's the lady who Love! Love! LOVED! me with a temporary job for me to do that "might" turn into a permanent thing. The only hitch is, I'd have to start tomorrow and I've already committed to other work for my current employer. Not to mention a much-needed haircut and eyebrow wax. but whatever. So I tell her that I could do it starting Thursday and would that work? She sez she'll check and get back to me.
So I go to my meeting, everything is hunky-dory happy good, but I can't go out to lunch with my gal-pals like usual because I haven't gotten my work done due to the oversleeping thing. So I head home, mulling over the possibility of working for a property management firm.
Well, then comes Bad Day, Part the Second. I got my little self into a stupid (minor) accident. I'm driving along, at maybe 20 mph (fortunately), after turning off the freeway off-ramp at my exit. Well, I glance away briefly and when I look back the little red car in front of me is looming big. So I slam on the brakes but it's too late and - due to the ridiculously slick roads - the car goes skidding right into the back of that ugly Toyota Matrix (I hate those cars. They're fugly). And then THAT car went flying into the back of the car in front of them!
Three Cars, people. THREE. Tres. Stupid. Well, the fortunate part of all this is that there was no damage to any of the cars or any of the people in the cars. Well, the drivers of the other cars will tell you there were 'scrapes' on their bumpers but I looked and didn't see anything that would make me request a driver's insurance card or their phone number. But we all pulled over to a different spot out of the way of traffic and exchanged information. And, because I have a nifty Moto RAZR cell/camera phone, I used it to take a few pictures of the "damage." Now, admittedly, the pics taken by my camera phone are not great, but they're good enough to show what damage their isn't.
Anyway, the bottom line is, I did the right thing: I gave both drivers my information, I dutifully collected their information, and I called my own insurance company and provided them with the pictures and the information I had and my version of what happened. The bottom line is, it was my fault and that totally stinks. But it coulda been a lot worse.
So I go home and start work while drowning my sorrows in the Chicken Tom Kha Gai soup I picked up on my way home. And then I get an instant message from my brother. Seems his fiancee had also gotten into an accident this morning! But in her case, it wasn't her fault and the back end of their car is smushed. They sent me a picture; the bumper is hanging off. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but it did put my own little fender-bender into perspective.
So while I'm feeling a little goofy about feeling so melodramatic about my 'accident,' I get a call back from Temp Agency Lady. She tells me that no, the company needs someone TOMORROW but if that person doesn't work out she wants to send me because she's "not as excited about" the alternative person. So I miss out on my first potential temp assignment. It's just as well, I think, because I'm not all that interested in working for a property management company. But still - it was an opportunity, and I hate letting those pass me by...
So yeah, bad day in a lot of ways. But now that I think back on it, those bad things were pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. There were also some really good things that happened today:
- Rennie and I went to our 'beginning competitive obedience' class again tonight and she's doing really well! It's a class that teaches "attention" and getting the dog to focus on the owner/handler... so far Rennie seems to do much better at class than she does when we're practicing at home. No idea why, but there it is... So we have our homework for the week and for the moment, she's exhausted and now asleep with her hippo in her crate. Awwww... so cute.
- The guy I met at Sandi's wedding called me again tonight, and we finally got a chance to talk some. We're getting together on Saturday for lunch. On the one hand, I'm excited about getting to know someone new. On the other, I'm a bit apprehensive about getting involved with anyone. And he drinks and I don't think he knows I don't, so telling him about that is going to be a bit trying too - if we even get to that point. So we'll see. It's just lunch, right?
- I got my first 'paying gig' for web design! I received the deposit check today and as soon as I get a little extra time I'll get started mapping out the site. Stay tuned! :)
